ALBERTON, P.E.I. - Prince Edward Island has banned two pesticide products after four private wells tested positive for traces of dichlorpropylene.
Environment Minister Chester Gillan announced on Thursday that Telone C-17 and Vapan, used by strawberry plant operations, will be banned from further use on the Island.
Homeowner Chris Murphy, who had dichlorpropylene detected in his well in Alberton this week, said he was glad the products have been banned
``They've got to start somewhere,'' he said, adding his family is still dealing with the repercussions of learning their water is no longer safe for human consumption.
``We don't know what the long-term health effects will be for us,'' he said.
It's widely believed that the chemical found in water samples taken from the four wells originated from Westech Agriculture Ltd., a strawberry-growing operation.
Dichlorpropylene is used in a fumigant Westech injects into soil prior to planting.
The town of Alberton, backed by concerned citizens, lobbied to have the two products taken off the list of pesticides allowed for use on the Island.
A total of 32 wells have been tested to date in Alberton. The last tests were conducted earlier in the week by water resources personnel.
The results were expected to be back from the lab on Monday.
